How can we help our children express their emotions?

Talking about our emotions doesn't come easily. We need to recognize what we are feeling and our emotions are mixed so many times. We also need to feel that we are in a safe place to share them... And most of all, we need to trust in the person we are going to share our emotions with. Our children have exactly the same needs as we do. But our children's brain structure is still maturing, making it harder to become aware of their own emotions and learning how to cope with them.
All of this has got me thinking of a fun tool that could help me as a parent, and my children as well, to understand better this amazing and complex world.
I found a basic emotions' table (it's a portuguese version only) to be filled on a daily basis with our kids. This table is based upon the work of the American psycologist Paul Ekman (who was also the consultant to the movie Inside Out, from Disney Pixar) and it mentions the five basic emotions, showing some little characters: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear. It includes an area to identify the most felt emotion of the week and a notes' area.
Our experience has been really good so far and the most felt emotion is, normally, Joy. One of these days, however, our eldest was really nervous about a school event (she had to talk in front of an audience) and with the help of this table, she was able to recognize what she was feeling as Fear. We have talked about it, how she could cope with it and she progressively felt reassured.
This table is magnetic and we've placed it on our fridge, accessible to the children. Even our little one is using the table with our help, for he hasn't learnt how to read and write yet.
I'm including here Paul Ekman's Parent's guide to the movie Inside Out, which is really insightful on the emotions theme. I'm also including a link to the Feelings Card Set from Generation Mindful, in English, that can be helpful as well.
Até já! / See you soon!
